Micah's 4th Birthday

Micah's birthday was pretty unique this year.  It was his first summer birthday. He got to spend a birthday with my family for the very first time.  We went up to my Mum's house on Tamborine Mountain to celebrate with Mum and my brother Sydney, on the Saturday before his birthday.

Gran got him a personalised cake at the local bakery

Then he enjoyed blowing out his #4 candle

He did it!  Of course Uncle Syd made fun of Mummy as the fan blew the candle out before Micah did.  Not to worry I moved the fan.  Uncle Syd makes every birthday fun!
For lunch, we had chicken and cold slaw.  But the kids did not like it so they got chips and sandwiches.   The decorations also began to fall down with the fan.  Which made it all the more fun for Uncle Syd, and Micah who laughed at Uncle Syd's jokes.

On his actual birthday, January 9th, there was certainly no snow or ice on the ground where we lived like previous birthdays in the USA. It was very HOT!  It reached 35 degrees C (95 degrees F) on January 9th.
It was very humid too.  YUCK!  I am not a fan of the heat.  Fortunately it is uncommon for it to get this hot and stay this hot all summer.

We started the day turning up the ceiling fans on high and opening all the windows.  We sadly do not have air conditioning in every room.  Only in one room, which is the office. This is quite a culture shock as I have not been in Australia for a summer since 2005 to 2006.   In American houses, well the ones in Virginia, every room has vents for heating or air conditioning.  Even the bathroom and loo's have a/c!

We then had pancakes for breakfast at Micah's request.  We said a sad goodbye to Daddy who started his first Australian job that day.  He has been home for 4 months and we will miss him!

Our good friends Fiona, her 3 kids Beau, Sarah and Jon came over in the morning for a play. Our new friend Bec joined us too.  They gave Micah gifts and wished him a Happy Birthday.  Thanks Bec and Fiona for the gifts!

Opening gifts.   Lucy had just a nappy and a thin shirt on to keep cool.

Later that day we went over to Amanda's house.  Amanda is a new friend from church.  She also has air conditioning. This was a huge blessing as it was too hot to stay home with no a/c.  We kept very cool for most of the afternoon while we enjoyed getting to know Amanda and her new baby boy Jay Jay.

Back home again we had pizza for dinner and ice cream for dessert.  Jeremy said growing up he often got to pick his birthday meal and loved it.  He does not remember ever having an actual party but he had a blast all the same spending it with family.  So we will probably not be a birthday party family ourselves.  It is A LOT of work and money.  Instead we will do lots of little birthday events to make the day special. Also I love to decorate in a theme.  This year it was Rah Rah the Lion theme from ABC for kids.  I made him a picture card of the Lion.  One birthday we may have a party in the park or at the beach and invite others to join in the fun.  But this year it was easier on us to have a low key birthday.  Especially after a huge move from America to Australia.

Micah had an ice cream bowl shirtless with his his candle from Mum.  Despite the heat, he still enjoyed himself.

Then it was time for the presents, in our air conditioned office.  As by now I was really getting tired of the heat.  We got some 2nd hand toys for free from Bec's opp shop donations. Her church has so much donations that they are giving away stuff to those who help.  BONUS!  That works for us.  Free presents and Micah was really happy with them.

Micah loved making this later on.  He stuck it on his window.

He also got his first bike from Nana and Sir, who sent it to us in a package ordered from K'Mart.  He was so excited.  He LOVES riding his tricycle. Nana must have noticed on Skype that it is getting too small.

Micah's first big boy bike.

I do not know if every Mum does this, but in thinking about his birthday, I think back to when he was born. I happened to find him sleeping in almost the same position that he was sleeping in on the day he was born.  Still in a fetal type position.  It melted my heart.

I must say I am one blessed Mummy to have Micah in my life.  He is such an incredible son and I enjoy him so much.  We go through rough patches of course.  Despite the cute sleeping photo's above Micah has always been hard to get to sleep.  Unlike his sister who mostly goes to sleep soon after her head hits the pillow.
I am looking forward to the year ahead.  Micah is really interested in art, riding his bike, and playgrounds.  He loves eye spy, the American way by guessing the colour of something.  He loves imagination games, telling stories and funny jokes.  He loves the computer, just like his Daddy.  He really enjoys school work.   He can write his name and enjoys teaching himself to write letters like T and S.  He loves highlighting Mummy's bible...under supervision that is!  He loves books and being read to.  I am also starting to home school him, which I will post about soon.
