My Miracle Mum turns 79!

We celebrated Mum's 79th birthday yesterday. She really is a walking miracle or in her case a breathing miracle! Mum had beaten the doctor's odds once yet again. Throughout her life she was told she would not live past 13, then 21. Then she was told she would not be able to have kids.... Ahem... And the latest that she would possibly not live another year. Well that was over 15 months ago!
It was a simple, low key birthday.
I made a banana bread for her cake.  She happily watched the kids blow out the candles, since her lungs are no longer able to. Yet despite her COPD (emphysema) Lucy, Mum and I went on a girls outing and visited the plant nursery. Together we picked up many pots of flowers to plant in her garden. This was Lucy's first time to a nursery. She was overjoyed that so many flowers could be in one place. She was tempted to pick them all!
For Mum's present we also got her yet another garden critter to add to her growing collection. In the arvo Mum, Jeremy and the kids snuggled on the couch to watch Paddington. Mum has always loved this British bear. Her and Micah both roared with laughter. I got dinner dished out although she sneakily cooked it while we were picking up the movie! Yet to see her cook on her beloved wood stove is such a joy.
I'm thankful she's made it this far! I'm trying to soak up every single moment of time.  I'm trying to file all these memories away in a treasure box in my heart. She's beaten the doctor's odds so many times! We don't know if we will have her with us for her next birthday. So like our dear Doctor friend told us we 'make the most of every moment as we never know if it will be our last'.
We are so blessed to have her in our lives. She's truly a blessing. I just spoke to her on the phone and she said she already planted one of Lucy's flower pots in the garden and named it Lucy's corner. She will make a corner of the garden for the other grandkids. She has already planted sunflowers for me, my favorite flower, and has done since my wedding.
She's not perfect like none of us are, but I've sure learned to look closer at the beauty of who she is. To take note of her kindness and generosity. I am, now, proud to call her my Mum. Which coming from a poor upbringing I was often ashamed and embarrassed of her. Yet now I have a new perspective. Being told she might not live longer than 1 year, now over 18 months ago will do that! Yep, She was totally worth moving back to Australia for.
